Overview

Anne Maher serves as a trusted advisor and counsel to her clients in the area of advertising and consumer protection regulation. Clients rely on Anne to guide them through food, drug, cosmetic and dietary supplement advertising and marketing issues they may incur. Anne also has extensive knowledge and experience advising clients on the advertising and labeling of products that are subject to the overlapping jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Anne works vigorously to assist her clients on a broad array of advertising topics, including: the review and evaluation of advertising substantiation, the express and implied claims conveyed by promotional messages, and the design and implementation of consumer perception surveys. She also takes the time to assist companies thoroughly, but efficiently to ensure they follow and comply with the emerging rules and policies on internet and social media marketing issues.

Prior to joining Kleinfeld, Kaplan & Becker, Anne worked at the FTC from 1992-2001 where she served as the Assistant Director of Advertising Practices in the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. As the Assistant Director, Anne oversaw law enforcement investigations and led industry outreach efforts in areas such as food, dietary supplement, OTC drug, tobacco, alcohol, infomercial, and online advertising. She also served as the designated liaison with the FDA and USDA where she worked closely with the staff of both agencies on a wide range of projects and regulatory actions. Anne also served in the Office of the Director, Bureau of Consumer Protection and as an Attorney Advisor to an FTC Commissioner. In her free time, Anne is a frequent speaker at industry and association meetings involving advertising and law policy. Anne was also recognized by Best Lawyers® in America for Advertising Law from 2012–2020.
